The Expedition Model (EX) is a new addition to the King’s line up. The EX is designed with excitement, speed, glide, long-distance paddling, comfort and stability in mind. The EX combines the ultra-light weight and speed of a racing board with the stability of a recreational board. Here some photos of Chris Hammond on a 14' Expedition at Carlsbad Lagoon. Review- Chris Hammond
I don't have a ton of experience on race boards, but the ones I've tried seemed to have a lot of side-to-side wobble to them. This wasn't the case with the Expedition! Pretty much right out of the gate I felt extremely comfortable, even when standing sideways to the mild chop. It was pretty easy to step back for a buoy turn, though I'd probably do better after a couple of more tries on it.
Even with the smaller fin that was on it, I was able to take 8-10 strokes per side without switching over, and I don't consider myself to have great paddling form. The board just felt smooth through the water, nice glide and no chatter whatsoever.
Into the wind it felt pretty good, not as fast as the Bark I tried, but twice as stable. I think I probably made up up the speed just because I didn't have to correct any wobbles. I paddled hard downwind from the I-5 bridge to Dog Beach and really felt like I was moving! The Expedition felt like a knife through butter with the wind behind me.
All-in-all, I was really impressed with the board. It was fast, but not a rocket. I think its selling point will be with people like me that want a board that I can race on, cruise around the lagoon comfortably, do a ten mile downwinder, or paddle home from Catalina if the mood strikes me. It's stable enough that I could spend days on it. Basically, the Expedition seems like a Swiss Army Knife. It'll do just about anything.
